Le jeu des Sisyphes

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus betrayed the gods. He was condemned by the gods to push a boulder to the top of a mountain which, once at the top, would inevitably roll back down to the valley, forcing him to start all over again ad lib.

For the ancient Greeks, this myth reminded mortals that rebellion against the gods and their implacable justice was pure folly.

This ordeal has echoes in our modern world: the expression ‘a Sisyphean task’ describes an interminable and arduous task that must be repeated over and over again, with no or uncertain results.

I drew inspiration from this myth to create Le jeu des Sisyphes. By imagining Julia and I in the role of Sisyphus, transporting the mountain to a theatre stage and the rock becoming the entrance and exit to a show. Exactly what we are in real life, two artists. We have betrayed the gods of show business and our punishment is to perform the same gestures over and over again, which are devoid of content: arriving on stage and leaving after a scene or at the end of a show. This is our rock and our struggle not to succumb to madness.

Dans la mythologie grecque, Sisyphe a trahi les dieux. Ce dernier alors avait été condamné par les Dieux à pousser au sommet d’une montagne un rocher qui, une fois en haut, roule inéluctablement vers la vallée, l’obligeant à recommencer ad lib.

Pour les Grecs anciens, ce mythe rappelait aux mortels qu’une rébellion contre les dieux et leur implacable justice était une pure folie.

Ce supplice éveille des échos dans notre monde moderne: l’expression “un travail de Sisyphe” qualifie une tâche interminable et ardue, qu’il faut toujours recommencer pour un résultat nul ou incertain.

Je me suis librement inspiré de ce mythe, afin de créer Le jeu des Sisyphes. En imaginant Julia et moi dans le rôle de Sisyphe, en transportant la montagne sur un plateau de théâtre et le rocher devenant l’entrée et la sortie d’un spectacle. Exactement ce que nous sommes dans la vraie vie, deux artistes. Nous avons trahis les dieux du spectacle et notre punition est d’exécuter éternellement les mêmes gestes, qui sont prives de contenus : l’arrivée sur scène et le départ après une scène ou à la fin d’un spectacle. C’est ça notre rocher et notre lutte afin de ne pas succomber à la folie.
